Back to work
Well i'm back after having my amazing daughter Beatrice Iola Skinner, Biss for short. I've been off trying to be a grown up and look after the little lady, it's definietly been the most challenging thing I have ever done in my life so far!
Here's a few bits of work I did before and during my time off. These were created for Papercraft Inspirations magazine for there summer holidays issue.
These are something a little different - just using pen and ink for a new high quality mountain bike magazine called Cranked. They are too illustrate an adventure story through the lake district.
I still have lots more work to share and hope to do so over the next coming months - Naomi
Baby card printables for Papercraft
Wow it really has been a long time since I last posted - been a busy time with christmas and moving house and getting ready for a baby! I have however just finished another large commission which I can't share yet but am very excited about - anyway this is a recent commission I completed for Papercraft Inspirations magazine which I can now share. It's also very topical as my husband and mines first child is due on the Feb 1st! Check out the cute little printables here you can download them for free and create lovely little cards with them. Enjoy - Naomi x
St George's Bristol - Brochure Cover
I was delighted to be asked by St George's to illustrate there next season brochure cover, this is the 3rd illustrated cover St George's have used on there brochure's - you can see the other 2 here and here. They had an idea in mind for the cover and hopefully I have bought it to life for them, they wanted this version to be slightly pulled back so you could get a sense of where St Georges is within Bristol. I really enjoyed creating this little illustration and was very pleased to receive a few copies in the post - I'm also looking forward to seeing whats inside and what exciting things St George's have got going on next year. Hope you like it - Naomi x
Pets in Santa hats

A little catch up...
Hi - here I am again with quite a long break in between - I have been working on loads of stuff but nothing much that I can show yet! My little illustrated book is now finished and I cant wait to see it, but it will be a while before I can show it. I can however show the latest map I have created for Page and Moy's Discover Magazine - its of Hong Kong, I really loved this one what an incredible looking city! Hope to go there someday (my travel list is getting very long)
I have also been creating some little buildings for Bristol City Council to go on a new website about Bristol being a new trial open city - you can read about it here. I created a lot of buildings and backgrounds and then Lee Dorgan (a designer at Bristol City Council) has added in another couple of layers showing people and devices, it's all going to work as an animation with all the layers moving in different directions. I cant wait to see it all finished but here is a little taster.
Another lot of work I can show are some Logos I created for a bike brand Merida - It's not something I would normally do but I really enjoyed it - it also required my work to be less girly and a lot more graphic - so see what you think.
I have a lot more designs/illustrations that I hope to show soon. There are some new christmas and baby card designs for Papercraft Magazine, some little postcards, a front cover for a seasonal brochure, a stationary design for WHSmiths and possibly some new little websites. So keep an eye out!
Meanwhile - a little bit of news about me, well my husband and me - we are expecting a baby at the beginning of February which is very exciting yay - we are also pretty petrified as it is our first child! I hope to keep working on my little illustration business as best I can but I'm not exactly sure how that will go but I will keep you all updated. Naomi x
Lately....
Well not really lately, lately I have been working on a little book commission, unfortunately I cannot show any details until after the book is published, but I am very excited about it. So instead I thought I would mention a few of the things I have been doing alongside that. A new map commission showing Orlando Florida, some Bridge drawings for the Architecture Centre Bridge 150 festival and some Logos for a bike magazine (which I can't show yet either!) So I have been busy and just really not had chance to update this little blog of mine. Right off to draw another new map (if only I could actually visit all these places! - one day) - Naomi x
A summer show by Drawn In Bristol
Come along and see this years exciting new show by Drawn in Bristol - there will be some amazing pieces of work on show - I am exhibiting a piece to - and some of the proceeds are going to charity. Come along be great to see you there. Naomi x
City Map Of Florence
The sun is out hooray - all I can think of is swimming in the sea, lying on the beach and sipping cocktails (makes it quite hard to focus on work when that is all you are thinking about!) So in the spirit of sunny climes and relaxing holidays here is my latest map illustration for Discover magazine. A guide to the beautiful city of Florence - The little gap at the top is where the stamp for that city goes and the title runs along the bottom left (just in case you were wondering). I really hope to make it to florence someday it look's like a stunning city and I really enjoyed capturing parts of it's charm in my map. I would love to hear what you think so please do leave a comment - it will make me smile. Naomi x
You can see some of my earlier maps here
Automatic Cycles
I recently created a little bit of typography to go on a bike. Here are the bikes being showcased at the Bespoked Handmade Bicycle show. The bikes were designed and handmade by John Ross of Automatic Cycles and this was his first time exhibiting having only built 4 bikes in total ever! The bikes are beautiful with incredible attention to detail. I only hope I did them justice with my typography. I love the colours John chose - the white and orange type looks great against the pink and green backgrounds. The logo which was made into a head badge works really well and its great to seeing my work used in such a way - definitely a first for me. Thanks John! -Naomi x
Tools of my trade/04
Tools of my trade 04 inspired by my amazingly talented friend Rebecca Sellors who is an incredible costume designer and maker. She is truly talented and has worked on many well known films. My husband and I were also lucky enough to have her make his suit and my dress for our wedding (so many talented friends!) . Anyway here is my little pattern illustrating a few of the things Rebecca uses everyday. Hope you like it - check out previous Tools of my Trade here and here - Naomi x
This is Matt and me with Rebecca on our wedding day - amazing memories

Three Ways To Wear/03
A Different Drummer
I have recently completed a lovely little commission for my agent Advocate-Art for a New York young educational work book. It needed four characters to be illustrated for a story about a boy who is a little different, it really took me out of my comfort zone. I have only recently been creating characters and people in my illustrations - it is something that hadn't really featured before, as I found drawing people tricky so would try and avoid it as much as possible (sounds crazy for an illustrator to be scared of drawing people but I was!). I am usually drawn to inanimate objects, pretty things, architecture and food so that is what I tended to stick too. However to progress and become a fully rounded illustrator I had to embrace my fear and actually now after lots of practice I really enjoy drawing people. There is still definitely room for improvement but so far I am happy with the outcome.
If you want to improve your people drawing skills - I would suggest maybe trying to find a life drawing class to attend - they really are brilliant fun and allow you to really loosen up your style and understand the human form. I found this really helped me when trying to create new people and characters. Also practice lots and lots of practice. You can also check out my characters porfolio here - see I have been drawing lots of people lately! Naomi x
Wedding invites
These are the latest bespoke wedding invites that I have recently worked on - they included a Save the Date, Invite and Information sheet - I will also be producing a table plan once that has been decided and will share that once it has been done. The couple in question wanted something fun, bright and summery which also included the places they would be getting married and celebrating at. They also wanted everything to work together without being too matchy, mathcy so I feel I have achieved that, and they seem very happy with the results, so that's all that matters yay!
If you would like some bespoke wedding stationery or know a friend that would please contact me at naomi@naomidesigns.co.uk for more information.
